WELCOME TO THE SIXTH FORM
Here at the English College, the Sixth Form is not just about academic success- it’s also about having fun, making new friends and most importantly finding new challenges. We believe that our smaller sixth form has a real family atmosphere, to which friendships are formed quickly and opportunities to broaden horizons are constantly provided. Academically, teachers provide first class teaching through lessons that are enriched with enthusiasm and innovation. The support provided along the way teamed with our welcoming teachers will enable you to fulfill your academic potential as well as develop into a well-rounded individual. The Sixth Form also provides excellent opportunities for students in a multitude of extra- curricular activities, whether that is sports or creative interests. Students can also involve themselves in volunteering work and school trips. Life as a Sixth Form student is challenging and rewarding in many ways. Students are given greater independence and freedom but can still rely on a firm framework of support and advice, which builds confidence and develops skills that universities and employers look for in today’s competitive world. We hope you enjoy life here at The English College Sixth Form and being a part of our family.

‘ The best thing that a teacher can give their students is to teach them to love a challenge, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy the effort and be passionate about learning ’
– Carol Dweck
The Sixth Form students at The English College, should strive for PRIDE at all times.
- Passion for learning
- Respect each other
- Inclusive education
- Determination for success
- Excelling for excellence
Of course we expect the same standards of all our students, but the attitude to learning is just as important in Year 12 and Year 13 – maybe even more so.
What can you expect from us in return?
In return for your passion, respect, inclusive attitude, determination and excellence, the College pledges a great deal of support and opportunities for you when you’re in the 6th Form. All of these, as well as challenging lessons and the chance to work with your peers in a safe, stimulating and enjoyable atmosphere will help you to become the best that you can be.
We are glad you are interested in joining The English College Sixth Form, which provides a challenging academic and extra-curricular programme in a friendly and thriving environment. Your future here at The English College will provide all kinds of academic opportunities coupled with personal development and responsibility. Our expectations of sixth formers are high; that you have the motivation, desire and self-discipline to give your best to your chosen subjects and fully support the College. In return the College will provide you with the opportunities and guidance to achieve your full potential. GCSEs have given you a wide and balanced foundation, however, the coming two years of study will demand much more from you. You will work to a far greater depth which will be monitored through regular assessments. Outside of the classroom, you will be expected to organise and manage your time effectively in order to meet deadlines and develop subject knowledge through further study. The excellence of our examination results means that nearly all of our students go on to university and are fully supported and advised in the application process along the way. This relies upon effective relationships between students, teachers, tutors and, most importantly, parents. I look forward to meeting you personally. In the meantime, please read on and find out what our Sixth Form has to offer.
Leader of Sixth Form
Since September 2015 A levels have been going through significant changes. Most subjects have now moved to a new assessment structure where the AS qualification is no longer part of the final A Level grade (previously it counted as 50% of the final A Level grade).
Subjects available at A Level
Art & Design
Drama & Theatre Studies
English Language & Literature
Geography Government & Politics
Mathematics: Level 3 Mathematical Studies
BTEC NATIONAL LEVEL 3
BTEC Nationals are Level 3 (A Level equivalent) work-related qualifications.
We offer a choice of 4 BTEC subjects:
Creative Media Production – 1 A level equivalent
Information Technology – 1 A level equivalent
Science – can be studied as 1, 2, or 3 A level equivalent
Travel & Tourism – 1 A level equivalent
BTEC Nationals provide specialist, work-related learning, delivering the knowledge, skills and understanding students need to prepare for their chosen careers. BTEC Nationals offer progression to higher education or directly into employment.
Extended Diploma programmes are made up of 18 units of study. The qualification is equivalent to 3 A levels and is graded at Distinction *, Distinction, Merit and Pass level. We will be offering an extended diploma in Science only.
Units are assessed through coursework, both practical and written, some of which may be in controlled, timed conditions. Whilst completing units, students will receive a feedback and response opportunity to help them reach the highest levels.
It will be possible, for a student to study the smaller Diploma (12 unit) course with the addition of one or two AS courses in Year 12. Entry requirements for the AS course must be met.
Students wishing to study one of our BTEC courses will need a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade C or better
Students should be aware that many courses which they may wish to take after completion of the BTEC could also require a grade C in GCSE Mathematics and students will be encouraged to achieve this during Year 12 if not attained in Year 11.
Students choosing BTEC qualifications will be offered further advice and guidance before final choices have to be made. Full details of the BTEC courses can be found later in this booklet.
This is a one year intensive programme designed to support learners who narrowly missed their 5A*-C and who maybe unsure of which pathway to choose. This programme will give students the opportunity to retake GCSEs and study new GCSEs in order to progress to a level 3 AS/A2 or vocational programme of study.
You will study 5 subjects from the following list:
- GCSE Maths (retake)
- GCSE English (retake)
- BTEC Travel and Tourism
- BTEC Creative Media
- BTEC Applied Science
Given the range of subjects you will study, you will receive supportive teaching leading to active learning. This will involve the development of critical thinking skills, through to the analysis of film and experiments. You will be assessed regularly to ensure that you are on track to pass all of your GCSEs.
There are no entry requirements for the foundation courses.
